1 TBS Active dry yeast

1 TBS Sugar

1 Cup warm water (105-110 degrees F) {You can replace your water with a cup of warm beer and your sugar with honey for a bit of a change of flavor.}

1 tsp salt

2 Cups flour (I do one cup unbleached all purpose and one cup whole wheat)

(If you want to make a thin crust pizza, just halve this recipe.)


1) Combine yeast, sugar, and warm water in a large bowl. Allow to sit until the yeast forms a layer of foam on top of the water-about ten minutes.

2) Mix in salt, and flour- stir with a spoon, or mix with dough hook if using a mixer, until it forms a uniform ball. Add flour if needed to keep if from being too sticky, and then knead by hand on a smooth surface, or knead with dough hook until well mixed.

3) Place dough in an oiled bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Let rise for an hour.

4) Punch your dough down and briefly knead on a smooth surface. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

5) Roll out your dough to fit your pizza pan, or baking sheet- should be about a quarter of an inch thick.

6) Add your sauce, cheese, and toppings and bake for 12 minutes. Slice and serve.

My suggestions for sauce:

I usually use a can of UNSALTED tomato puree, 16 oz… And simmer that with a couple cloves of minced garlic, dried basil, 1/4 cup chopped fresh oregano. I let that simmer over low heat until the volume is reduced by about half… 30-40 minutes depending on how low you have your heat set. This makes a fair amount of sauce, so depending on how much sauce you want on your pizza, you may want to save some. I also occasionally make a green sauce of garlic, and steamed spinach I have put through the blender.

1 box Betty Crocker™ Original Supreme Premium brownie mix
Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on brownie mix box
1 1/4 cups Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy creamy white frosting (from 16-oz container)
16 large marshmallows
1 Betty Crocker™ black decorating gel (from 0.68-oz tube)


  • Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Line 8- or 9-inch square pan with foil so foil extends about 2 inches over sides of pan. Spray foil with cooking spray. Make brownies as directed on box for 8- or 9-inch square pan. Cool completely, about 1 1/2 hours. Remove brownies from pan by lifting foil; remove foil. For 16 brownies, cut into 4 rows by 4 rows.
  • Heat frosting in microwavable bowl uncovered on High 30 seconds, stirring every 10 seconds, until frosting can be stirred smooth and fluid. If frosting becomes too firm while decorating, microwave 5 seconds; stir.
  • Top each brownie with 1 large marshmallow. Spoon 1 tablespoon frosting over each marshmallow to coat. Let stand until frosting is set, about 30 minutes. Use black gel to make eyes and mouths.

  1. Inspiration images: To find a variety of inspiration, try googling “Day of the Dead makeup.”
  2. Face paint: Buy a palette of Halloween face paint from your local drugstore. Make sure it contains enough white paint to cover your face!
  3. Foundation: Paint your entire face white, from the hairline to the jawline. Apply with a sponge and pat makeup on to get fuller coverage. Set white makeup with white powder.
  4. Accent color: Choose an accent color and use it to make large circles around the entire eye area (you will use this same color later to do detailing).
  5. Details: Use an eyeliner pencil to apply details to match your inspiration image, or get creative and add your own spooky touches! An eyeliner brush and liquid liner will help you get a finer line.

The chupacabra was a very recent addition to the Mysterious Monster Club, coming many decades after Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster made their debuts. But only a few years after the chupacabra first appeared on the scene, the mystery was solved.

Bigfoot, the mysterious beast said to roam the North American wilderness, is named after what it leaves behind: big footprints. Bigfoot’s Hispanic cousin, the chupacabra, is also named for what it leaves behind: dead animals. Though goats are said to be its favorite prey (chupacabra means “goat sucker” in Spanish), it has have also been blamed for attacks on cats, rabbits, dogs, chickens, and other animals.

There are no known photographs of the beast, or even credible footprints. Instead, the chupacabra is known mostly through a few dozen eyewitness sightings and many dead animals. The chupacabra is probably the world’s best-known vampire after Dracula, and its victims are often claimed to have been found completely drained of blood.

Descriptions of chupacabra vary widely, but many accounts suggest that the creature stands about four to five feet tall. It has powerful legs that allow it to leap huge distances, long claws, terrifying, glowing red eyes, and distinctive spikes down its back. While some believe that chupacabra sightings date back to the 1970s or earlier, the monsteractually first appeared in 1995 in Puerto Rico; there are no records of any vampiric chupacabras before that time.

Walking through the streets of La Antigua Guatemala, surely your curiosity and imagination have taken flight and you have wondered what things have happened here in this place, what stories have been told about those still-standing buildings, what moaning and groaning hides, whispering among the ruins, and what kind of footsteps have clattered along the cobblestones.

This is one of those stories that still echoes through the silent nights of the full moon, so if some day you wander through the market and beyond and let your feet take you into the La Recolección neighborhood, don’t panic; just let go and allow yourself to feel a bit of the history and the magic that makes this place what it is.

There, they tell of a character who goes out walking at dusk. Is it a man? Is it a goblin? Is it a demon? No one knows for sure, but among those who have seen and heard it – and among those who haven’t – all agree that it’s someone or something very small, dressed all in black with a big shiny belt. On its head, it wears a black hat that hides both its big eyes and its questionable intentions. The feet, encased in a pair of black boots, clomp loudly, and the nearby walls echo with the noise. Over its shoulder hangs a silver guitar.

They say that El Sombrerón (“The Big Hat,” also known as Tzizimite, which means “goblin”) makes mischief through the neighborhoods of the city with his four mules. Sometimes he rides people’s horses, making them gallop all night and wearing them out; sometimes he braids their tails and manes. But he also likes to make young girls fall in love with him, especially those with big eyes and long hair. He enchants them with his sweet voice and the beautiful melodies from his guitar. When they come to the window to see who it is, they become bewitched. He follows them; he braids their hair; they become unable to eat or sleep. They fall under his spell and his mules stay hitched to their houses, while he sings and dances for his beloved.

So if one day you, or a friend, are attracted to a sweet voice that drifts through a window and you feel the moon’s influence beginning to flow through your veins, remember these words, because there are many sombrerones and sombreronas ready to make their mischief.

  • One bag of marshmallows (for smaller hands, look for the jumbo marshmallows)
  • Edible decorating markers
  • Other decorating candy that can stick to or be inserted into the marshmallows, such licorice lace
  • Candy or lollipop sticks


  1. Start by selecting marshmallows that have a clean and smooth shape and are not squished or torn.
  2. Take two small pieces of licorice lace and insert them in the marshmallow to represent the eyes of the skull.
  3. If you are just using the edible decorating markers, then start by drawing the eyes, followed by the nose and mouth.
  4. After you have framed the basic elements of the skull, let your imagination run wild with the endless possibilities on how to decorate the skull with colorful adornments and embellishments.
  5. Use different shapes and colors for a more festive sugar skull.

Cheddar Witch Fingers

  • COOK TIME: 15 minutes
  • YIELD: about 30 “fingers”
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 ounces (1 cup packed) shredded, extra sharp cheddar cheese
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornmeal
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
  • 1 large egg
  • Coarse salt
  • 30 sliced almonds
  • Black food coloring gel, optional

Combine butter, cheese, flour, cornmeal and cayenne (if using) in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until mixture has the texture of wet sand. Transfer to a bowl. Using a fork, mix in egg until dough holds together. Turn out onto a sheet of parchment paper about 12 inches long. Top with another sheet of parchment and press dough into a ½-inch thick circle.

Freeze for 15 minutes or refrigerate up to 3 days. Remove dough from freezer and roll into a rectangle about 8 inches wide and 10 inches long. Return to freezer for an additional 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, if desired, paint almonds. Mix a tiny amount of food coloring with a tiny bit of water. Using a small paintbrush, paint color onto almonds and set aside. Remove dough from freezer and preheat oven to 350º. Peel off top sheet of parchment. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into two 8×5-inch sections. Then cut into about 30 ½-inch wide strips. Place strips on an ungreased cookie sheet.  Sprinkle with coarse salt, to taste.

Use your fingers to shape each strip, rounding the ends and bending in various directions to create a knobby shape. Using a sharp knife, score “knuckles” onto each “finger.” Lightly dab one edge of each finger with water, then gently press the almonds into the dough. Bake for about 15 minutes, until the fingers are golden and crisp. Transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
