Plaster Hands for Halloween Decorations

plaster hands for halloween decor

plaster hands for Halloween decor

Use a food-grade alginate, a water-based skin-safe molding powder, to cast hand molds. (Don’t put your hands in the plaster of Paris; it can cause burns.

  • Alginate powder
  • 2 1/2-quart plastic container
  • Plaster of Paris powder
  • Craft knife
  • Masking tape
  • 3/4- to 1-inch drill bit and Surform planer, if needed
  • Paintbrush
  • Black gouache

  1. Stir alginate with water in a 1-to-1 ratio, nearly filling the 2-quart container.
  2. Position hand how you would like it to be cast (if you want the sculpture to function as a candleholder, hold a candle in your hand, keeping it straight; then carefully remove candle), and insert hand into alginate mixture. Hold still 3 to 5 minutes, until the mold is set.
  3. Pull hand out (this won’t affect the mold). Mix plaster of Paris according to package directions, and pour into mold to fill. Let set for several hours.
  4. Remove entire mold from container. Use craft knife to cut the mold in half neatly, and remove plaster hand. Set aside to dry completely (this may take a few days). You can reuse the same mold several times over the course of a day or so. Just reassemble the pieces, securing with masking tape, then put it back into the container. Stop using the mold once it dries out.
  5. If making a candleholder, you may need to widen the opening between fingers and thumb a bit with a drill bit, to accommodate the candle. If necessary, use Surform planer to smooth the surface.
  6. Brush with gouache for a gray pallor; let dry, and arrange on a table.

Eeeek chilled monkey brains anyone.

Well if the brains are jello and they are served with a slice of chocolate cake maybe you won’t pass up this treat made famous in the movies but made slightly more appetizing in this instructable.

This would make an awesome Halloween dessert and would be an especially gruesome table centerpiece.

The preparation of this cake is best spread over 3 days:

Day 1 bake the cake and make the ganache
Day 2 remaining steps 1 through 7
Day 3 just prior to serving step 8

The whole cake does take a bit of work but if you like you can omit some steps which will not only save time, but will also reduce the equipment and ingredients required making the cake a little bit more economical.

If you like you can omit the hand painting and just add some extra black fondant in the nostrils. Also the addition of the Persian fairy floss in step 8 is completely optional.

Or you can just just skip straight to step 7 and make up some brains to serve with raspberry sauce for an easy yet scrumptiously scary treat.

Evil Dead Necronomicon Pizza

Evil Dead Necronomicon Pizza

Evil Dead Necronomicon Pizza

Elizabeth over at The Gastronomicon has provided pictures and her recipe, so you can follow her example and make it for yourself.

1 TBS Active dry yeast

1 TBS Sugar

1 Cup warm water (105-110 degrees F) {You can replace your water with a cup of warm beer and your sugar with honey for a bit of a change of flavor.}

1 tsp salt

2 Cups flour (I do one cup unbleached all purpose and one cup whole wheat)

(If you want to make a thin crust pizza, just halve this recipe.)

1) Combine yeast, sugar, and warm water in a large bowl. Allow to sit until the yeast forms a layer of foam on top of the water-about ten minutes.

2) Mix in salt, and flour- stir with a spoon, or mix with dough hook if using a mixer, until it forms a uniform ball. Add flour if needed to keep if from being too sticky, and then knead by hand on a smooth surface, or knead with dough hook until well mixed.

3) Place dough in an oiled bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Let rise for an hour.

4) Punch your dough down and briefly knead on a smooth surface. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

5) Roll out your dough to fit your pizza pan, or baking sheet- should be about a quarter of an inch thick.

6) Add your sauce, cheese, and toppings and bake for 12 minutes. Slice and serve.

My suggestions for sauce:

I usually use a can of UNSALTED tomato puree, 16 oz… And simmer that with a couple cloves of minced garlic, dried basil, 1/4 cup chopped fresh oregano. I let that simmer over low heat until the volume is reduced by about half… 30-40 minutes depending on how low you have your heat set. This makes a fair amount of sauce, so depending on how much sauce you want on your pizza, you may want to save some. I also occasionally make a green sauce of garlic, and steamed spinach I have put through the blender.
